Scenario estimate
What AI-assisted development could change
These are scenarios, not promises.
Real results depend on your codebase, tests, review process and the type of work. A HUB technical assessment replaces these assumptions with an estimate for your own system.
| Work type | Cautious | Favorable |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance & bug fixing | 5% | 20% |
| New features | 10% | 30% |
| Testing & QA | 20% | 40% |
| Migration & refactoring | 15% | 35% |
| Content & catalog work | 25% | 50% |
| SEO & technical metadata | 20% | 45% |
Reductions are multiplied by a platform factor (Magento 0.85; custom PHP and marketplaces 0.9; others 1.0) and a codebase factor (well tested 1.1; typical 1.0; legacy 0.7), and capped at 60%. AI tool subscriptions are added back to the scenario cost.
The evidence
Why a range,
not a number
Research on AI coding productivity points in both directions. In a 2023 controlled experiment, developers with GitHub Copilot finished one programming task 55.8% faster than developers without it (study). In a 2025 randomized trial, experienced open-source developers working in large repositories they knew well took 19% longer when allowed to use AI tools (METR).
Results depend on the task, the codebase, the tests and how the work is reviewed. That is why the calculator uses conservative ranges per type of work and reduces them for complex platforms and legacy code.
Where gains tend to be larger
Tests, migrations, repetitive content and metadata work, and well-specified features with clear acceptance criteria.
Where gains tend to be smaller
Unfamiliar legacy code, unclear requirements, and changes to security-critical or business-critical logic.
What the scenario leaves out
Onboarding time, changes to review and release processes, and the cost of mistakes that reach production.
How HUB works with AI
Engineers direct coding agents on bounded tasks, review every change and keep automated tests and release control. Inside our process.
Questions
About the
calculator
For an estimate based on your own code, ask for a technical assessment.
Is this a quote?
No. It is a scenario based on published assumptions. A quote requires a review of the codebase, the backlog and the delivery process.
Why are AI tool subscriptions included?
Coding agents and assistants have running costs. The scenario adds them back so the difference is not overstated.
Does AI replace developers?
Not in our workflow. Coding agents speed up bounded tasks, while engineers remain responsible for architecture, security, review and production releases.
Is anything I enter sent to HUB?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Only if you choose to request an assessment is a summary copied into an email draft that you review and send yourself.
